THREE LANDSCAPES

460 63RD STREET
NORTH OAKLAND, CA
GARDEN DESIGN AND ART PRODUCTION:
ELDER WITH VARIOUS COLLABORATORS
(Credited on individual slides)
Rosette Costello, Principal, and Calvert Hand, K-1 teacher, deserve top billing for this extraordinary
community art project that took place over four years and resulted in art gardens ringing all four facades of an otherwise dumpy-looking campus constructed with portables. When the historic school was demolished, OUSD installed the temporary structures with a promise to rebuild. It never happened.
Ms. Costello, a fiery advocate for children's "whole-being", employed several dedicated artists to
transform the large campus into a total environment resonant with children's creative marks.
Elder was commissioned to create the gardens. Jaime Morgan led the mural projects. Ellen Oppenheimer
contributed her textile expertise via banners and hanging quilts.
One of the most well maintained of all public school gardens in Oakland.
Open to the public during school hours
Funding and/or materials:
Alameda County Building Unions Apprenticeship Program
City of Oakland Cultural Arts Program
Potrero Nuevo Environmental Fund
Reed Brothers Security
Central Concrete
Uncounted hours of parent labor
