DESIGN PROPOSALS
2009
CLIENT: CITY SLICKERS URBAN FARMS
POTENTIAL FUNDER: OAKLAND CULTURAL ARTS - OPEN PROPOSALS
RENDERING; DAVID FILLIPINI
Since 2005 City Slickers Urban Farms has maintained a significant presence in West Oakland, teaching food growing skills in the context of a true "food desert". During 2009 the group received stewardship
of two parcels managed by Oakland Park & Recreation with the proviso that they maintain them for
community cultivation and recreation. Elder was a finalist for an Open Oakland Public Art Grant
to develop a basic design and amenities. The south parcel, Union Park, was designated for food
production. The north parcel was to be a recreational space. We proposed an undulating fence
that was part play structure, part visual timeline for the neighborhood and part support structure for fruits and vegetables. The proposal was not selected for final funding but City Slickers did implement
the basic design for the south parcel along with a simplified entrance.
Since then City Slickers has moved south on Peralta street to an even larger site serving an even wider community.
